Advancing Process Safety in Nigeria's Industries
The Process Safety Initiative of Nigeria (PSIN) is dedicated to fostering knowledge and best practices in Process Safety across Nigeria's Oil & Gas and Process Industries, leveraging the experience and success of the Center for Chemical Process Safety (CCPS).
The growth of process-related industry activities in Nigeria, coupled with recent safety incidents, has necessitated a platform for advancing Process Safety knowledge and good practices. Driven by the Nigerian Society of Chemical Engineers (NSChE), PSIN collaborates with stakeholders across Oil & Gas and Chemical Process Industries.
- Inspired by CCPS model after Bhopal incident
- Formalized through NSChE/AIChE MOU
- Extending CCPS reach to Africa starting with Nigeria
PSIN's mission is to foster knowledge and best practices in Process Safety across Nigeria's industrial sectors through collaboration, education, and advocacy, creating a safer working environment and protecting communities.
- Create strong Process Safety awareness
- Share best practices among industry players
- Enhance competencies of industry practitioners
Our vision is to become the leading advocate and resource for Process Safety excellence in Nigeria, creating a culture where safety is integrated into every aspect of industrial operations, protecting people, assets, and the environment.
- Zero major process safety incidents
- Integration of Process Safety in academic curricula
- Active collaboration with global Process Safety community
The growth of process related industry activities in Nigeria, coupled with some unfortunate safety incidents associated with the industry lately, has necessitated serious consideration for a platform for advancement of Process Safety knowledge and good practices in the country. Evidently, this is substantially a Process Engineering issue from the professional stand point and is therefore driven by the Nigerian Society of Chemical Engineers (NSChE). It is however also expected to be of immense interest to other stakeholders in the Oil & Gas and Chemical Process Industries in Nigeria. Through this initiative NSChE thus seeks to collaborate with these like-minded stakeholders to foster the laudable cause of Process Safety in industry in Nigeria.
Notably, in the aftermath of the Bhopal incident in India in 1984 which shook the entire world, the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE) spearheaded the formation of the hugely successful Center for Chemical Process Safety (CCPS) in USA, in collaboration with key Oil & Gas and Process Industry companies. Today CCPS is the leading global exponent of Process Safety and has its reaches and footprints all over the world (North America, South America, Europe, Asia/Pacific), perhaps with the exception of Africa.
NSChE signed an MOU with AIChE a few years ago which provides a collaborative platform on matters of mutual professional interest. Both parties have identified Process Safety as a key issue of interest in this regard. This initiative is therefore envisaged to provide the necessary framework for formally extending the reach and capabilities of CCPS to Africa, starting with Nigeria, within the context of the subsisting NSChE/AIChE MOU.
PSIN Development Timeline

Initial Sensitization
NSChE presented a paper titled 'Imperatives of Process Safety in Nigeria' at the 2016 DPR International HSE Conference on the Oil & Gas Industry, marking the preliminary sensitization of the industry to Process Safety needs.
- First formal presentation on Process Safety imperatives
- Engagement with Oil & Gas industry stakeholders

First National Conference
A one-day national conference on Process Safety in Nigeria was hosted by NSChE and supported by DPR, with participation from CCPS of AIChE and the Safety & Loss Prevention SIG of IChemE UK.
- International collaboration established
- Initiation of PSIN registration process

Formal Establishment
PSIN was formally established and registered as a not-for-profit organization by the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC), spearheaded by the Nigerian Society of Chemical Engineers (NSChE).
- Official registration with CAC
- Development of governance structures

Program Implementation
PSIN launched its first major programs including the PS Public Lecture, became institutional partners for the CCPS African PS Webinar, and published its first Quarterly Newsletter.
- First Public Lecture held in Q2 2023
- Quarterly Newsletter launched

Global Recognition
PSIN was admitted as a member of the US Center for Chemical Process Safety (CCPS) in April 2025, recognizing the organization's coming of age and enabling access to global Process Safety resources.
